Bending Time: Re-envisioning Work in the New Paradigm
It took about seven years of devoted practice for me to build my dreamy dream practice as a solo practitioner working with fascinating people from all over the globe: NBA teams rock stars and individuals who'd reached the pinnacle of their chosen fields. When I speak to groups of students & aspiring healing artists, their number one question is: How'd you do it??
Was it my talent? Skills? Did I know the 'right people' & have the right connections? --- Nope. Nope. Hardly...
In addition to consistent, daily dedication, the number one factor that contributed to building my dream practice was my willingness to operate outside the constructs of time as we know it. Sometimes that meant working at 6AM because filming began early - other times that meant working at 11PM because a game went into overtime. Now, not everyone at every stage of life will have this kind of flexibility, but all of us can reconsider the rigidity and historical absolutes with which we regard our WORK. Learning to re-envision time as something I could bend and create was primary, fundamental and one of my greatest lessons in entrepreneurship.
If you desire an exceptional life you need to cultivate an openness for exceptional ideas
Our culturally-conditioned concept of time and how we work has always felt super odd & arbitrary to me - Monday-Friday. 9-5. Living for the weekend! 40 hours with 15 minute breaks. Peaking in our 30s & 40s and defining work as something we 'have to do' only for as long as we can before we can 'retire' to do nothing - ? No thank you!
The notion that time is outside of ourselves - the Newtonian paradigm that we've been adhering to - is a myth. ...A construct manufactured to structure a dying industrial world and 1800s train travel . As new frameworks & systems spring up in the months & years ahead, our notion of time will similarly evolve to something that is WITHIN us, not outside of us. Time - like our lives & work - is something we create, not adhere to & obey. We can re-envision our work as a creative expression of ourselves & our purpose, one that will evolve, ebb and flow and re-invent over the course of our entire lives - it doesn't start at 18 and end at some abitrary retirement age. We can opt out of 'hustle culture' and the glorification of busy that leaves our lives devoid of real meaning, intimacy and feeling our humanity.
